DietBet is a completely legit scam free site. As long as you play by the rules they will play by the rules too. Of course this site isn’t for everyone, but I think it’s a pretty cool idea and if earning money is a motivation to lose weight then why not join this site.

I recently completed three games on DietBet (www.dietbet.com). For those of you who don't know what that is, DietBet is a game where you put money on the line saying that you'll lose 4% of your weight in 4 weeks. You submit pictures with code words to prove your beginning and ending weights. After four weeks, anyone who has hit their 4% goal is a winner and splits the pot. The theory is "social dieting" where people are successful when they attempt to lose weight as part of a group with a common goal.

Maybe all of this would bother me less if I wasn’t seeing a lot of folks participating that are in phenomenal shape. They don’t need to lose weight and I question is that really the message we want to send. after spending SO MUCH time helping people understand the scale is not a measure of success.

It keeps me on track and I've set weight goals for myself anyways on my calander that are more intense than DietBet so really I'm just there for the support. That's what's missing from your post, the fact that a lot of the people hosting DietBets have lost a significant amount of weight and now continue their fitness journey in the spotlight to help others. Most of the players are serious about their goals and openly encourage others, lifting them up when mistakes are made, and cheering for their victories. It's a great platform. I can understand how pushing yourself to reach your goals can be hard and stressful, but it's definitely worth it to put the efffort in. If you're eating right and exercising, finishing each day/week at the right deficit, then there's nothing to worry about. Being a little stressed about loosing weight is a lot better than the stress of being unhealthy.
I agree Jonathan. I could not figure out how to “write off” my bet to Healthy Wage. I hope you can figure it out but, it definitely isn’t fair to be taxed on Misc. income that isn’t income. Tax me on the payout, not my initial “BET”. Mine was worse I had a 1099 for $1800, I bet $900 but ended up having to pay taxes on my $900 winnings and my $900 bet. This was for tax year 2014, and I actually filed an extension so I could research how to write off my bet, but never was able to and just ended up paying the tax. So my winnings actually were quite a bit less. Oh, well I AM healthier!

When nobody crosses the finish line by the end, the winner is the person who has lost the most weight, as a percentage of their total goal, by the final weigh-in. For example, suppose the challenge is to lose 4% in 4 weeks and the two frontrunners are Joe and Sally. Joe had to lose 10 pounds to reach the finish line. Sally had to lose 6 pounds to reach the finish line. At the final weigh-in, Joe had lost 5 pounds, or half his total goal. He's at 50%. Sally had lost 4 pounds, 67% of her total goal. Sally wins.
