Winners 47 People Used I will be hosting a DietBet starting in January featuring the traditional 4% in 4 weeks game. Please do not sign up for the DietBet10 if you do not have 10% of your bodyweight to lose! I will not be doing it, but am sharing it with you guys because many have requested games focused on longevity and maintenance.
April 10, 2013 at 2:14 pm Brandi@SC Runner says Message 1 of 3 LOG INSIGN UP Dietbet is not seen as a good diet to lose for long term weight loss since the competition itself lasts less than a month. That means that even many of the “winners” of the bets will lose their motivation once the contest is over since they will no longer be motivated by money.

Not too hard, right? And at the end of the 4 weeks, you submit your official weight-out and split the pot with everyone who met the goal. Even better, you’re allowed to join up to 3 Kickstarter games at one time. So now, you have even more opportunities to win money. And DietBet is very transparent in that you will always win your bet back if you hit the goal regardless of how many people win. If you want to check out DietBet and join a few games, click here!
Think we can get enough folks? This study examined the effectiveness of DietBet, which is a commercially available Web-based program that uses social gaming and financial incentives to promote weight loss. Upon enrollment, players join a game and enter money into a pool. All players have 4 weeks to lose 4% of their initial body weight. During the game, players report their weight and interact on the DietBet platform. At the end of the game, all players within each game who lose at least 4% in 4 weeks are declared “winners” and split the initial pool of money bet at enrollment. The primary aim of this study was to conduct a naturalistic examination of engagement, retention, and weight loss outcomes in DietBet. Previous findings from financial incentive weight loss trials have shown that the possibility of losing large (vs small) amounts of money for not meeting weight goals motivates better overall weight loss . In addition, more frequent self-weighing and greater social influence for weight loss have been found to be associated with better weight outcomes [12-15]. Given these findings, we explored whether: (1) betting more money at enrollment, (2) completing more weigh-ins, and (3) having greater social engagement/influence predict greater percent weight loss and greater likelihood of winning. Finally, given evidence that weight loss clusters in social networks and that group characteristics impact weight outcomes in group-based weight loss competitions , we also explored whether weight loss clusters within games (ie, players in the same game achieve similar weight loss) and whether game characteristics (eg, number of players) are associated with weight outcomes.
Our next DietBet begins on May 1st. Participants will be $35 that they can lose 4% of their body weight in a 4 week challenge. 70% of the money will automatically go the Foundation. In addition, those who meet the 4% goal will split the remaining 15% in the pot. Participants can even designate their winnings to the Foundation.

Warnings. When signing up for a challenge, Dietbet will automatically add $20 of “Official Weigh-in Tokens” to your cart. These are not mandatory. I think using the word “Official” is misleading. They should use “Optional” or “Additional” instead. You should treat them as extra raffle tickets for prizes like Fitbits and such. If you want that, fine, but otherwise be sure to remove them otherwise it’s just wasted money.
